Lesson 20

Cultural Note

Last lesson, we talked about the Chinese using bamboo strips to write on before paper was invented. A while after, a Chinese official by the name of 蔡倫 made the first sheet of paper.

蔡倫 used mulberry leaves and fibers from other plants mashed together in a mixture later laid out to dry to make paper. Soon after, paper began replacing the traditional writing surfaces used in Ancient China such as bamboo strips and wooden tablets as it is cheaper, easier to make, and easier to write on.
